FAQ

When and where are classes held?

Every Tuesday between 6:30-8:30pm.

Sessions are held at West Thornton Community Centre, London Road. For how to find us, click here.

Please aim to arrive 5 or 10 minutes beforehand, especially if you need to get changed, as classes do begin promptly.

How much does it cost?

Your first class is free so you have nothing to lose by giving it a try.  After that, each class costs just £6, which is payable in cash at the end of the session. Alternatively, a flat monthly fee of £20 can be paid at the start of the month.

There is also an annual fee providing you membership to the KUGB, Karate Union of Great Britain.  This includes insurance cover, your grading record book and licence slip. For new members under 16 the cost is £22 and for adults it is £25.  For renewals in subsequent years this is reduced to £17 and £18 respectively.

What should I wear?

Loose clothing such as a t-shirt and tracksuit bottoms will be perfectly fine for your first few sessions. We train barefoot.  Eventually you might want to invest in a Karate suit (or gi).  We can provide these or you can purchase one yourself from a martial arts retailer.

Do you have changing facilities?

Yes, we have both male and female changing rooms on site.

Do I need to be physically fit?

No.  Karate is for everyone, regardless of shape, size, sex or age.  There is no pre-training necessary and we assume no previous experience with any martial arts.  However, if you train regularly you will begin to notice an improvement in your physical fitness, flexibility, self confidence and mental focus, as well of course as your self-defense abilities.

What style of karate to do you practise?

We teach authentic Shotokan-style karate with our chief instructor having trained under some of the most renowned Shotokan practitioners. However, our teaching syllabus extends beyond the strike-block curriculum that is normally found in Shotokan schools.

I'm a parent. Can I watch my son/daughter during the class?

Yes. There is a seating area at the back of the class. You are welcome to watch from there for the duration of the class.  Please, however, can we ask that spectators do not interfere with the class while it is in progress.

I already have a grade in karate. Can I wear my belt?

If you have trained under any another Shotokan organisation, such as the JKA or SKIF, you are welcome to wear your belt.  If you have trained under a different style altogether, it might still be possible but we encourage you to get in touch or speak to the instructor in advance.  If you have trained in another martial art altogether, we would ask that you wear a white belt to start with.

Anything else?

We just ask that you remove or tape up any jewellery while training and, if possible, please also keep your nails cut reasonably short.  Ladies might find it helpful to have their hair tied back.  These steps avoid injury to yourself and others.

So how do I start?

Just show up!  There is no beginners' course but when you arrive make yourself known and we'll be happy to show you the ropes.  We look forward to welcoming you to our martial arts club.
